Neonatal registration of ocular malformations (July 1990 December 1992) S. PERRONE (1). L. PINELLO (2). M. E. ZANNIN (2). M. CLEMENTI (2). (1) Clinica Oculistica; (2) Dipartimento di Pediatria, Università di Padova SUMMARY Preliminary results of Ocular Malformation (OM) registration in North East Italy are reported. During the period July 199.0-Dicember 1992, a total of 25 cases of OM were detected, yielding a birth prevalence of 1.94 per 10,000 (95% CI 1.17-2.69). As OMs are rarely isolated, a careful examination of newborns as well as chromosomal analysis are advisable. Key words: birth defects; eye malformation; epidemiology; registry. INTRODUZIONE Circa il 50% delle cecità in età pediatrica sono causate da malattie determinate geneticamente (1)…

P. Steindler, P. Cardin and S. Perrone Eye Clinic of the University of Padova, Via Giustiniani, I-35100, Padova, Italy Abstract The electric consensual response wlien the collateral eye underwent electroretinographic stimulation was studied. Results obtained from normal subjects and 17 patients with optic atrophy are discussed. Introduction Many studies have been conducted in humans and in other animals to verify whether the stimulation with light of one retina could in some way influence the electrical activity of the controlateral retina. Motokawa and Mita (1942), Karpe (1945), Monnier (1946), and Dodt (1956) observed a positive or negative electrical potential in the controlateral retina with a latency of 150-300 ms. Uchermann (1955) and Bagolini (1959) could not d…

Baricordi lstituto di Genetica Medica (1) Dipartimenro di Chimica, Università di Ferrara, (2) Clinica Oculistica, Università di Padova, Italy Summary We have observed a significant increase of zinc concentration in plasma and erythrocytes in a group of Italian Behcet patients, evidencing a rare hyperzinchcmic condition associated with the disease. The increased zinc level observed does not show any relation to the presence of therapy or with the impairment of the hlastogcnic response to HSVI, a specific cellular defect in Behcet disease, confirmed in the present study. The possible biological meanin…

Current Concepts on Ultrasound Proceedings of the 2nd Italo-Yugoslavian US Meeting Chieti, 1-3 maggio 1980 P. Steindler, D. Doro and S. Perrone Abstract Echographic (A scan) examination performed after the intravitreal injection of aqueous in four rabbit eyes demonstrated echoes of a 10 dB dynamic range. These are similar to those demonstrated in cases of malignant glaucoma. After paracentesis, the dinamic range of these echoes was markedly reduced. The possible role that intraocular pressure plays in the variation of the chemicophysical status and, therefore, in the acoustic impedance of the vitreous humor. is discussed. Introduction So-called "malignant glaucoma" can appear after antiglaucomatous surgery. It is characterized by an aqueous secretion…

MORO Padova, Italy Abstract Axial and coronal CT sections of the orbital optic nerve appeared normal in four out of five male patients, aged between 39 and 49 years, who had bilateral ophthalmoscopicalty visible optic nerve drusen. One patient had no clinical signs of increased intracranial pressure, but CT showed bilateral, symmetrical enlargement of the orbital opticnerves with no change after contrast enhancement. X-rays revealed a large sella and normal optic foramina. Orbital optic nerve thickness was also measured with standardized echography and was found…

Indeed. immunogenetic factors controlling susceptibility to the disease are strongly suggested by the association between the HLA-B5…

Melchiorri (1) (1) lstituto di Genetica Medica - Università di Ferrara, (2) Clinica Oculistica - Università di Padova, (3) lstituto di Oftalmologia - Università "La sapienza", Roma. Introduction Clinical and immunological features suggest a viral etiology for Behcet's disease (BO), while the association with HLA determinants supports the hypothesis that immunogenic factors are involved. Although conflicting results have been obtained from virus isolation, recent reports further implicate a virus, namely HSV 1, in the etiology of BD [1-2]. More recently, specific antibody and cellular proliferative responses to HSV 1 were studied in BD patients [3…

Recent studies have also demonstrated that the disease is mainly linked to a split portion of HLA-B5, HLA-Bw 51 (1). It has also been demonstrated that there is an im…

In typical cases, ophthalmoscopy evidences creamy-white retinal vessels. Although the picture is graded clinically (table 1), grade III cases are extremely rare. CASE REPORT The first daughter of non-consanguineous parents; spontaneous birth (weight 3430 g) following a full-term uneventful pregnancy. The family history revealed hyperchole…

Olavio R. Baricordi, Alberto Sensi, Paola Pivetti-Pezzi, Salvatore Perrone, Alessandra Balboni, Giovanni Catarinelli, Fabrizio Filippi, Loredana Melchiorri, Alfio Moncada, and Pier Luigi Mattiuz Abstract Thirty-eight Italian patients with Behcet's disease, all with ocular involvement, (28 complete type and ten incomplete) were typed for HLA A,B,DR, and DQ antigens. A significant increase of HLA-B51 (p < 0.00001) and DRw52 (p = 0.045) with no significant difference between complete and incomplete syndrome was found. The involvement of B51 antigen as the main immunogenetic factor in the disease is suggested by the high value of relative risk (RR = 16.03). However, the association with the II class antigen DRw52 (RR = 2.77) cannot be easily explained as a secondary assoc…

Lippincott Company, Philadelphia. Salvatore Perrone, P. Steindler, F. D'Ermo, D. Doro Introduction Classical malignant glaucoma, one of the most serious complications of surgery for angle closure glaucoma, is characterized by shallowing or flattening of the anterior chamber and elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP). Medical therapy, consisting of the administration of Mydriatic-Cycloplegic drops, systemic carbonic anhydrase inhibitors or osmotic agents, gives successful results in approximately 50% of cases. 2.3 For the remaining 50% of cases, however, surgery is required. Among the mos…

Copyright© 2003 Cambridge University Press 0952-5238/03 $ 16.00 DOI: I 0.10 I 7/S0952523803205046   Clara Casco, Gianluca Campana, Alba Grieco, Silvana Musetti and Salvatore Perrone Abstract SM, a 21-year-old female, presents an extensive central scotoma (30 deg) with dense absolute scotoma (visual acuity .cc 10/100) in the macular area (10 deg) due to Stargardt's disease. We provide behavioral evidence of cortical plastic reorganization since the patient could perform several visual tasks with her poor-vision eyes better than controls, although high spatial frequency sensitivity and visual acuity arc severely impaired. Between 2.5-dcg and 12-dcg eccentricities, SM presented (I) normal acuity…
